Ham Awry Improv is E X P A N D I N G !

Posted by Hammy on January 11, 2009 at 8:13 PM Comments comments (0)

Ham Awry Improv Troupe is Maple Ridge?s premier improv comedy company. We currently perform between 2 and 4 public shows each month in addition to 6 to 12 private functions per year. We want to do MORE!

That means we at Ham Awry are looking for 4 to 6 new improvisers to add to our current stable of 9 performers. Ham Awry Troupe members are paid per performance based on a percentage of revenue. Not all shows are revenue generating.

On January 18th, we are inviting you to come and show us your stuff. We will be calling back selected performers to our future troupe practice sessions to get to know them better.  Improvisers will be invited to join the troupe based their ?fit? with our current group. YOU DO NOT NECESSARILY need experience to be considered.

The audition will consist of short form improv exercises and scenes with other performers including current members.

If you?re interested in performing with Ham Awry, email us (aaron@hamawry.com) and tell us a bit about yourself!

Interested actors must be 19 years of age or older.

6 Free Shows Every Month!

Today, Ham Awry Improv Troupe announced four more free shows per month in Maple Ridge. The new show, titled ?GET PORKED!? is hosted by Maple Ridge?s newest watering hole, The Beast Public House, located in the local Best Western. Each Wednesday night, the comedy troupe showcases their headliners in a show that guarantees to be some of the best unscripted, unhinged and unrated improv theatre in town.

?Our newest show, ?GET PORKED!?, is different than our Saturday show at the Ridge Cafe in that it is a show for adults.? says Aaron Davis, a founding Ham Awry member. ?It is unrated and may contain mature themes depending on our audience suggestions. It is also in a pub, so our audience can enjoy a drink while they laugh their guts out.? continued Davis. Ham Awry is also proud to announce their own signature drink, a bright and tasty beverage called ?Tickle Me Blue? that was invented just for the troupe?s fans.

?And just like our show every second Saturday, we are really excited to offer this new weekly show for free to our audience. There is no cover and no ticket costs so anyone can come to any of our six monthly shows and have a good time.? Davis exclaimed. ?The decision isn?t whether or not to come; it?s simply which one to come to!?

Ham Awry Improv Troupe brands all of their free shows as short form improv. Small scenes are made up on the spot from audience suggestions in the style many may remember from the hit ABC television show ?Whose Line Is It Anyway?? hosted by Drew Carey. Billed as ?the greatest show NEVER written,? improv has something for everyone.

?GET PORKED!? is every Wednesday at The Beast Public House, located in the Best Western Maple Ridge (21735 Lougheed Highway). The show is free, starts at 8pm and runs to 9:30 or 10:00. The show is unrated and often contains mature themes. At ?GET PORKED!? you can drink all you want but please remember to LAUGH responsibly!

?Supervision Required!? is every second Saturday at the Ridge Cafe, located in the centre of Maple Ridge (170-22470 Dewdney Trunk Road). This free show also starts at 8pm and contains mature themes far more rarely. Parental guidance is suggested for those under 13. The next show is August 30th. The cafe is alcohol free and boasts some of the best Paninis in town. ?Supervision Required!?, The Greatest Show NEVER written!

LOCAL IMPROV TROUPE STEAMS TOWARD SUCCESS!

Ham Awry Welcomes Five New Members

Since its beginnings in 2005, Ham Awry Improv Troupe has not experienced the growth and success it has in the past 5 months. In January, with new found focus and commitment, the group began to book events all over Metro Vancouver. They have conducted workshops, performed in fundraisers, variety shows, sports events and of course, their biweekly free show titled ?Supervision Required!? With such speedy momentum, Ham Awry had no other choice but to quickly add 5 new performers to their stable.

?We were surprised by our success and it wasn?t long before we realized the seven of us were not going to be able to be everywhere at once? says Aaron Davis, one of the troupe?s founding members. ?It?s really fantastic to be forced into expanding our sable of improvisers? continues Davis. Today (June 1, 2008) Ham Awry has announced that they have expanded their members from seven to twelve to keep up with the demand of their new found success. New troupe members Angela Bell, Ryan Johnson, Scott Woods and Matthew Ross bring a variety of theatre experience and along with returning Ham Awry veteran, Richard Wiens will debut as early as Saturday, June 7th. The new troupe joins the old troupe (consisting of Aaron Davis, John Stuart, Martin Brochu, Brad Tones, Chris Cope, Harry Paring, Jennifer Moran and musician William Cardno) in showing Maple Ridge what improv comedy is all about.

?It started when we originally booked three free shows at the Ridge (Coffee Roasting Company). Within weeks, we were booked in variety shows and fundraisers all over Metro Vancouver? says Davis. Last month, Ham Awry announced that those original three free shows had been held over indefinitely. In addition to their private bookings, the troupe performs biweekly at the Ridge. ?Our Saturday shows at the Ridge are always free. We typically perform two sets, each about 50 minutes long with a short intermission? reports Davis. Their show consists of short improvised scenes based on audience suggestions. If it needs to be said, they are very funny too. Davis continues, ?We offer free shows to continue getting our name out there, to build experience and to give our community something other than CSI and unrealistic-reality TV to watch on a Saturday night. Our shows cross age and gender, giving anyone something to laugh at. We are also very grateful to Mitcheal at the Ridge for partnering up with us to make it all possible.?

The best way to find out what improv is all about is to experience it. Ham Awry Improv Troupe and the Ridge present ?Supervision Required!? every second Saturday night. The Cafe is located in the heart of Maple Ridge at 170-22470 Dewdney Trunk Road  and their next show is on June 7th. Seats for the 8pm start fill up quickly so getting their early is strongly suggested. Shows may contain some adult themes so parental guidance is always suggested. For more information, check out the website at www.hamawry.com or email the troupe at info@hamawry.com.  You can also find their group on Facebook.

Actors offer free improv

The Times

Friday, February 15, 2008

Ham Awry Improv Troupe, the improv theatre affiliate of Emerald Pig Theatrical Society, announced Tuesday three free improv performances at the Ridge Coffee Roasting Company. The Ham Awry show, "Supervision Required," includes many of your favourite improv games live and unplugged.

On stage will be local actors John Stuart, Aaron Davis, Brad Tones, Martin Brochu and Chris Cope, as well as a couple new stars from Vancouver, Jennifer Moran and Harry Pering.

"Together, they form Ham Awry Improv Troupe, a talented group of performers passionate about bringing you the greatest show never written," said a news release.

Improv is basically theatre without a script. Improvisers act out scenes completely unrehearsed and unscripted. They take suggestions from the audience and some basic framework to create famously funny scenes of unpredictable comedy. Every show is different and not even the performers know what will happen next. No two shows are alike and it is impossible to do the same show twice.

And when you're at the show, don't forget to participate in the Broken Dreams Lottery. Tickets to the lottery are free and the prizes include a date with a cast member of your choosing. The grand prize is a box of Smarties.

Each show runs from 8 to 9:30 p.m. at the Ridge Coffee Roasting Company (170-22470 Dewdney Trunk Rd.). Show dates are March 1, 15 and 29, and since no two shows are the same, you can feel free to attend all three. Parental guidance is suggested as shows may contain mature themes.
